Management Aptitude Test (MAT) Exam Pattern & Preparation Books List

Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a Computer-based standardized test being administered since 1953 to make easy Business Schools (B-Schools) to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied programmes. This exam has been taken more than 230,000 times yearly. The MAT exam is conducted by AIMA (All India Management Association)

There is no defined syllabus for MAT. In past examinations MAT mainly comes from following disciplines:

Paper Pattern:

  • Intelligence and Critical Reasoning:

In this, questions are asked related to direction sense, blood relations, coding and decoding, data arrangement, sequences and series etc and logic tests such as statement assumptions, statement arguments and statement conclusions.

  • Mathematical Ability:

The questions from Number, Systems, HCF and LCM, Averages, simplification, ages, Ratio Proportion, boats and streams, profit loss, percentages and discounts etc.

  • Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency:

The Data Interpretation and Sufficiency area contains sets of questions on Tables, Bar / Line graphs, Pie chart and Data Sufficiency.

  • English Usage (Grammar, Vocabulary, Proficiency and Usage Errors):

Questions on reading comprehension, antonyms, synonyms, analogies, sentence correction, sentence completion, fill in the blanks etc.

  • Indian and Global Environment:

GK, General Studies, Current Events



There were 200 multiple choice objective questions to be completed in 150 minutes. MAT is written as well as Computer Based Test.

For each wrong answer candidate will lose one fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that question or say it will be deducted as penalty to arrive at corrected score. If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is marked by the candidate; there will be no penalty for that question.
